Bed sheet sizes, the short answer
Bedding sizes follow the mattress: a queen is 60 × 80 inches (152 × 203 cm), a king 76 × 80 (193 × 203 cm), a full 54 × 75 (137 × 191 cm). Your bed is a queen? Buy a queen set. If the mattress plus topper is over 12 inches, check that the fitted sheet "fits up to" your height.
The rule to remember: Buy fitted sheets by your mattress size and height, and a duvet cover by the inches on your insert's label, never by the name of the bed.
For a queen, the whole shopping list fits on a sticky note:
- a queen comforter set, or a king comforter if you like it to hang low
- queen sheets deep enough for your mattress
- two queen pillows
- two Euro shams to stand behind them
Ready to pick one? Here are the bedding sets I'd buy.
Not a queen? Find your bed in the chart just below, then look for its row in each table after it.
Bed sheet sizes chart (inches and cm)
Sheets are sold by mattress size, so this chart names your sheets too. Don't worry if yours measures an inch off: one that comes out at 59 or 61 inches wide is still a queen, and queen fitted sheets are cut with that slack in mind.
| Size | Mattress | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 × 75 in97 × 191 cm | Kids, bunk beds, daybeds |
| Twin XL | 38 × 80 in97 × 203 cm | Dorms, tall teens, split king |
| Full | 54 × 75 in137 × 191 cm | One adult, guest rooms |
| Queen | 60 × 80 in152 × 203 cm | Couples, most bedrooms |
| King | 76 × 80 in193 × 203 cm | Couples who want room |
| California King | 72 × 84 in183 × 213 cm | Tall sleepers, narrower rooms |
A full is only 6 inches narrower than a queen, which is why full sheets look like they might stretch over a queen and never do.
Bedding size chart: flat sheets and comforters by bed
Flat sheets and comforters come in ranges because brands don't agree. One company's queen comforter is 88 inches square, another's is 96 × 96. Neither is wrong, but on the same bed the second one hangs 4 inches lower on each side. So read the inches on the listing, not just the size name.
| Bed | Flat sheet | Comforter |

| Twin | 66 × 96 in168 × 244 cm | 66-68 × 86-90 in168-173 × 218-229 cm |

| California King | 102-108 × 110-114 in259-274 × 279-290 cm | 102-110 × 92-98 in259-279 × 234-249 cm |
Comforter and duvet cover sizes: should you size up?
A comforter has to cover the top of the mattress, then fall down both sides. So the width you need is the mattress width, plus twice its height, plus the drape you like.
Take a queen with a 12 inch mattress: 60 + 12 + 12 = 84 inches just to reach the bottom edge. A 90 inch comforter leaves you 3 inches past it on each side. Not much.
Want to hide the box spring or the frame? Size up. A king comforter on a queen bed looks generous, not sloppy. Or keep your size and add a bed skirt.
Duvet covers work the other way: here, sizing up is the mistake. "Queen" covers two different inserts. One measures 88 × 88, another 92 × 96, and a cover cut for one sags or strains on the other. Read the size on the insert's label and match the cover to it, or take one an inch or two smaller for a plumper look. Never bigger, or the insert slides into a lump at the foot of the bed.
| Bed | Duvet cover | Bed skirt (top panel) |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 66-68 × 86-90 in168-173 × 218-229 cm | 39 × 75 in99 × 191 cm |
| Twin XL | 66-68 × 90-92 in168-173 × 229-234 cm | 39 × 80 in99 × 203 cm |
| Full | 80-88 × 86-90 in203-224 × 218-229 cm | 54 × 75 in137 × 191 cm |
| Queen | 88-92 × 88-96 in224-234 × 224-244 cm | 60 × 80 in152 × 203 cm |
| King | 102-108 × 88-96 in259-274 × 224-244 cm | 78 × 80 in198 × 203 cm |
| California King | 104-110 × 92-98 in264-279 × 234-249 cm | 72 × 84 in183 × 213 cm |
If you still need the insert itself, here are the budget duvet inserts I'd buy, with their real dimensions.
What's in a bedding set, by size
The size on a set tells you how big the comforter is. The piece count tells you what else is in the bag. A 3-piece set is the comforter and two shams. A 7-piece, or a bed-in-a-bag, adds the flat sheet, the fitted sheet and the pillowcases, and some throw in Euro shams or a bed skirt.
| Bed | Comforter set | A bed-in-a-bag adds |
|---|---|---|
| Twin, Twin XL | Comforter, 1 standard sham | Flat and fitted sheet, 1 pillowcase |
| Full | Comforter, 2 standard shams | Flat and fitted sheet, 2 pillowcases |
| Queen | Comforter, 2 standard or queen shams | Flat and fitted sheet, 2 pillowcases |
| King, California King | Comforter, 2 king shams | Flat and fitted sheet, 2 king pillowcases |
A bed-in-a-bag is the quickest way to make a whole bed match. Check its fitted sheet like any other, though: if its "fits up to" number is lower than your mattress, keep the comforter and shams and buy the fitted sheet on its own. Once you know your size, here are the sets I'd buy.
Fitted sheet sizes: the pocket depth matters more than the name
The reason a brand-new fitted sheet pops off the corner at 3 a.m. is almost always height. Measure your mattress with the topper on, then check the listing.
Standard sheets often fit mattresses up to 12 inches, and many now go to 14 or 15. "Deep pocket" is a label, not a size: brands put it on anything from 14 to 22 inches. Skip the label and find the number. It comes in one of two styles:
- "Fits up to 16 inches" is the mattress height the sheet takes. Compare it straight with yours.
- "14 inch pocket" is the fabric itself. It needs about 2 inches more than your mattress, so the elastic can wrap underneath.
So a 12 inch mattress wants a sheet that "fits up to 12 inches", or a 14 inch pocket. Same sheet, two ways of saying it.

Going up a size doesn't help: a king only bunches at the sides.

Bedsure Deep Pocket Queen Sheet Set
A queen set cut for deep mattresses: the listing says it fits mattresses up to 21 inches tall, so a 15 inch mattress with a 3 inch topper still has room to spare.

Gorilla Grip Fitted Sheet Holders, 4 Pack
If you love the sheets you have and only the corners slip, four adjustable straps clip them together under the mattress for a lot less than new sheets.
Pillow sizes: standard, queen and king
Two queen pillows side by side measure 60 inches, the exact width of a queen. That is why a queen bed looks fuller with them; two standard pillows leave a gap in the middle. Euro shams are the big squares that stand behind the sleeping pillows: two on a full or queen, three on a king. They are what takes a bed from made to finished.
| Pillow | Size | Per bed |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 20 × 26 in51 × 66 cm | Twin: 1, Twin XL: 1, Full: 2 |
| Queen | 20 × 30 in51 × 76 cm | Queen: 2 |
| King | 20 × 36 in51 × 91 cm | King: 2, California King: 2 |
| Euro sham | 26 × 26 in66 × 66 cm | Decorative, 2 to 3 behind the pillows |
The sizes people mix up: full vs double, California king vs king, and split king
Full and double: the same bed. 54 × 75 inches, two names. Plenty of comforters are sold as "full/queen", generous on a full and just enough on a queen.
California king vs king: not bigger, just different. A Cal king is 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer, so king sheets bag on it and Cal king sheets won't reach the corners of a king. Cal king sets are rarer in budget lines, so check the size before you fall for a color.
Split king: two twin XLs side by side. They often sit on an adjustable base. Together they make the same 76 × 80 as a king, so you need two twin XL fitted sheets (one per side, so each moves on its own), then one king flat sheet and a king comforter over both.
Twin vs twin XL: 5 inches of length. Twin sheets on a twin XL pull off the foot every night; twin XL sheets on a twin are only loose at the end.
Other mattress sizes: crib, full XL, Olympic queen
A few beds sit between the standards. Their sheets exist, but in fewer colors and rarely in budget sets, so check the size name on the listing word for word.
| Size | Mattress | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Crib | 28 × 52 in71 × 132 cm | Crib sheets only; a snug fit is a safety rule |
| Full XL | 54 × 80 in137 × 203 cm | Full width, queen length; full sheets come up short |
| Olympic queen | 66 × 80 in168 × 203 cm | 6 inches wider than a queen; queen sheets strain |
| California queen | 60 × 84 in152 × 213 cm | Queen width, Cal king length |
How to measure your mattress for sheets
You need a tape measure and two minutes.
- Strip the bed down to the mattress. Leave the topper or pad on if you sleep with one, since the sheet has to cover it too.
- Measure the width across the top, from side seam to side seam.
- Measure the length from the head to the foot.
- Measure the height in the middle of one side, from the bottom seam to the top of the topper.
- Read it against the charts. Width and length give you the size name. Height is your "fits up to" number, or add 2 inches for a pocket depth.
FAQ
Can I use full sheets on a queen bed?
Not the fitted sheet: it is 6 inches too narrow and 5 inches too short. A full flat sheet covers a thin queen mattress but barely tucks in.
How can I figure out what size bed I have?
Measure the mattress, not the frame, and find its width and length in the first chart. The tag sewn into the side usually prints the size name too.
Why don't my queen sheets fit my queen bed?
Almost always the pocket. Your mattress plus topper is deeper than the sheet was cut for, so the corners ride up overnight. Measure the height and buy the same size with a deeper pocket.
Will bigger sheets fit a deeper mattress?
No. A king is wider, not deeper, so it bunches at the sides and the corners still ride up. Keep your size and buy a deeper pocket.
What is split king bedding?
Two twin XL fitted sheets, one per side, under one king flat sheet and one king comforter.
What size duvet cover do I need?
The size on your insert's label, never the bed's name: two "queen" inserts can differ by several inches. An inch or two smaller looks plumper.
What should a bedding set include?
At least the comforter and its shams. A bed-in-a-bag adds the sheets and pillowcases, which makes it the easy way to change a whole bed at once.
