The best under cabinet lights put bright, warm light right where you chop, and the ones here go up without an electrician: they plug into an outlet, run on a rechargeable battery, or take AA batteries. All thirteen are under $50, and most stick on with magnets or adhesive, so a rental kitchen gets them too. If you buy one, make it the ASOKO three-bar kit at #1: about $33 for three 12-inch bars in a warm 2700K, with a dimmer on the cord.

1Top pick · Best overall
three slim plug-in LED light bars mounted under a kitchen cabinet

ASOKO Dimmable Plug-In Under Cabinet Lights, 3-Pack

$32.99
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

Three 12-inch bars, one plug, about $33. That covers three feet of counter, which is the stretch most small kitchens actually cook on.

The light is a warm 2700K, the same white as a cozy table lamp, so the counter looks inviting at night instead of like an office. All three bars together give 903 lumens, about 300 per foot, which is right where you want task light. A switch dimmer on the cord takes it from 10 to 100 percent and remembers where you left it. The best part for a rental: the bars hold on with magnets or 3M adhesive, screws only if you want them, and the plug is ETL listed. Prefer a crisper white? The same kit comes in 4500K.

2Cheapest plug-in bar
slim white 18 inch LED under cabinet light bar with a plug-in cord

GE LED HD+ Plug-In Under Cabinet Light, 18 Inch

$17.99$23.99 · 25% off
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

The least you can spend on a real light bar that plugs into the wall. It's one 18-inch fixture at about $18, rated at 800 lumens in warm white.

It's slim enough to vanish behind the cabinet lip, and the screws come already attached to the bar, so mounting takes a few minutes. A 12-inch cable is in the box to link a second bar later, which is how you'd cover a longer counter without a second outlet. GE rates it at 50,000 hours. The catch: it screws in, so you'll have two tiny holes to fill when you move out. The daylight version gives 1,000 lumens if you like a cooler white.

3Best rechargeable
five slim rechargeable motion sensor lights under kitchen cabinets with a small remote

EZVALO Rechargeable Under Cabinet Lights with Remote, 5-Pack

$35.99$39.99 · 10% off
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

No outlet near the counter? Five rechargeable bars and one remote solve that for about $36.

Each 10-inch light snaps onto a magnet plate, so you pull it off to charge over USB and click it back. The remote changes all five at once: brightness, three whites (3000K, 4500K and 6500K) and a timer, so you never climb up to fiddle with them one by one. In motion mode they come on when you walk in and off about 20 seconds later, and the 2400mAh battery lasts somewhere between two weeks and six, depending on how often you pass. Each light gives 120 lumens. That's a glow for the counter rather than full chopping light, which is true of every rechargeable on this list.

4Brightest bar
24 inch plug-in LED under cabinet light bar shining on a kitchen counter

Enbrighten 24-Inch Plug-In Under Cabinet Light

$39.98
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

If your kitchen is dark even at noon, this is the bar for it: 1,561 lumens from one 24-inch fixture, the most of any single bar on this list.

You pick from five whites, from a warm 2700K up to 6500K daylight, and press and hold the button to dim. The light scores 92 on color rendering, which means tomatoes look red and herbs look green instead of gray. A 5-foot cord comes with it, and if you add more Enbrighten bars later, one press changes all of them together. It screws up, so plan for that. About $40, and there's an 18-inch version at about $35 for a shorter cabinet.

5Most light for the money
24 inch warm white LED under cabinet light bar with an on and off switch

Maxxima 24-Inch Plug-In Under Cabinet Light, Warm White

$22.99
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

1,200 lumens for about $23. Count the light you get per dollar and only the six-bar kit at #6 comes close.

The Maxxima is a plain 24-inch bar in warm 3000K white, with an on/off switch on the fixture and a 5-foot cord you can detach. It's 1.25 inches tall, slim enough to hide behind most cabinet lips. Two screws hold it, spaced 16.7 inches apart. It doesn't dim, so if you want a soft glow late at night, look at the ASOKO at #1 instead. ETL listed, with a five-year warranty.

6Best for a long run of cabinets
six linked LED light bars under a long row of kitchen cabinets

Litever Plug-In Under Cabinet Lighting Kit, 6 Bars

$34.99
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

An L-shaped kitchen, or a long wall of cabinets? This kit gives you six 12-inch bars, six feet of light, from one plug.

Together they put out 1,920 lumens in warm 3000K, about 320 per foot. The dimmer comes in the box and goes from 10 to 100 percent, and the bars link with cables you can tuck into the clips provided. Adhesive pads are included, so there's no drilling unless you want it. One thing: the dimmer is its own, and the kit doesn't work with a wall dimmer. At about $6 a bar, it's the cheapest way here to light a whole kitchen.

7Cheapest rechargeable
two small rechargeable LED lights under a kitchen cabinet over a coffee maker

Gritin Rechargeable Under Cabinet Lights, 2-Pack

$15.99$16.99 · 6% off
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

The cheapest way to try cordless: two 10-inch rechargeable lights for about $16.

They're aluminum and plastic, with three whites (warm 3000K, a mixed 4500K and a cool 6000K) and five brightness levels. Four modes cover everything from a motion light that only wakes up in the dark to always on. On full brightness the 1800mAh battery runs about eight hours; in motion mode, one to six weeks. They charge over USB-C and hold on with magnets, and the box has adhesive iron plates for wood cabinets. Two lights cover a coffee corner or the stretch by the stove.

8Best touch-free switch
16 inch slim LED under cabinet light with a hand wave sensor over a sink

MYPLUS Hand-Wave Plug-In Under Cabinet Light, 16 Inch

$15.99$16.99 · 6% off
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

Hands covered in flour? Wave under this one and it turns on. Wave again and it's off.

It's a 16-inch plug-in bar, about $17, giving 420 lumens of neutral 4000K white with a color score above 90. Hold your hand under the sensor to dim it, and it remembers the level. The sensor only reacts within one to three inches, so it won't flick on every time you walk past, but you do need to wave close. At under an inch thick it sits nicely above a sink or a cutting board, the two spots where clean hands are rare.

9Best 12-inch wireless bars
three 12 inch rechargeable LED bars under white kitchen cabinets

ASOKO Rechargeable Under Cabinet Lights, 3-Pack

$32.99$49.99 · 34% off
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

Want cordless but find 10-inch lights a bit short? These three ASOKO bars are 12 inches each, the same length as the plug-in kit at #1.

Their 60 LEDs shine to the side and bounce off the cover, so you see an even strip of light instead of a row of dots. Brightness goes from 10 to 100 percent, one button cycles through three modes, and they charge over USB-C. Magnets hold them on metal, adhesive works everywhere else. For about $33, it's the tidiest-looking rechargeable set here.

10Best for charging several at once
six rechargeable under cabinet lights and a small charging dock on a kitchen counter

EZVALO Rechargeable Under Cabinet Lights with Charging Station, 6-Pack

$45.99
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

The thing that wears you down with rechargeables is charging them one by one. This EZVALO set comes with a dock that charges three at a time over USB-C.

You get six lights, a remote that reaches 16 feet, and a timer you set from 15 minutes to two hours. The 2000mAh batteries last about 13 to 40 days in motion mode, or around 11 hours left on. Same three whites as the five-pack at #3, with a button on each light if you want to change just one. At about $46 it's the priciest pick here, and the right one for a kitchen plus a pantry and a closet.

11Best plug-in puck lights
three round LED puck lights glowing under kitchen cabinets onto a backsplash

GE LED HD+ Plug-In Puck Lights, 3-Pack

$37.35$42.05 · 11% off
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

Puck lights throw round pools of light instead of an even strip, which looks lovely on a tile backsplash or inside a glass-front cabinet.

These three 3-inch GE pucks plug in, so there are no batteries to swap, and they link to each other with the cables in the box. Five whites to pick from, soft to cool. They don't dim, though, and pucks light a counter less evenly than a bar. About $39 for the set. I'd use them for looks, and a bar like the GE at #2 where you actually chop.

12Best battery puck lights
six black battery puck lights under open kitchen shelves with a remote

TECOMLIGHT Battery Puck Lights with Remote, 6-Pack

$22.99
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

Six puck lights, a remote and no wires at all, for about $23.

Each one takes three AA batteries (not included), which buy about 60 hours at full brightness, or a month and more at two hours a day. Rechargeable AAs make sense here. They do three whites plus 13 colors, dim from 100 to 10 percent, and have a timer. The rubber adhesive pads peel off clean, which is good news for a rental cabinet. A fun pick for open shelves or a coffee bar, in black or white.

13Best with a wall switch
two battery LED puck lights under a cabinet and a small wireless wall switch

Energizer Battery Puck Lights with Wall Switch, 2-Pack

$22.70
as of 1:05 AM ET · details

The one detail no other pick here has: a wireless switch that sticks to the wall like a real light switch.

It works from up to 50 feet, so you can put it by the kitchen door. Two pucks at 40 lumens each make this a soft light for a pantry, a dark cabinet or the corner of a counter rather than for prep. They run on AA batteries and turn themselves off after 60 minutes, which saves you from finding them dead in the morning. Tape or screws, your choice, about $23.

What to look for in the best under cabinet lights

A good under cabinet light comes down to four things, and the listing tells you all of them.

  • How it gets power. Plug-in bars are the brightest and never need charging, but you need an outlet within reach of the cord. Rechargeable lights go anywhere and come down to charge every few weeks. AA battery pucks are the simplest and the dimmest.
  • Lumens per foot. Divide the lumens by the length in feet. Around 200 to 500 per foot is task light, enough to chop by. Below that it's a glow, which is still nice, just not for prep.
  • The white. 2700K to 3000K is warm, like a lamp. 4000K is neutral. 5000K and up is cool daylight. Several picks let you switch, which helps if you're not sure.
  • How it mounts. Magnets and adhesive mean no holes, the renter's choice. Screws hold better on a bar you'll leave for years.

Plug-in vs battery under cabinet lights

Plug-in under cabinet lights win on brightness: the plug-in bars and kits here give 420 to 1,920 lumens, and you never think about them again. The catch is the cord. You need an outlet under or near the cabinets, and the cord shows unless you run it along the back edge and down behind the toaster.

Battery under cabinet lights, rechargeable or AA, go where there's no outlet. They usually come with a motion sensor, which makes them handy for a midnight glass of water. But they're dimmer (the EZVALO bars give 120 lumens each), and they come down to charge every few weeks. If you cook a lot, plug in. If you mostly want the counter to look warm and find your mug in the dark, wireless is easier.

A mix works well too: a plug-in bar over the prep spot, and a couple of rechargeable lights in the corner with no outlet.

How bright should under cabinet lights be?

For chopping and reading a recipe, aim for 200 to 500 lumens per foot of counter. The ASOKO kit lands around 300, the Maxxima around 600, and the Enbrighten close to 800. More than that on a white counter starts to feel harsh, which is where a dimmer earns its place.

Mount the bar toward the front edge of the cabinet bottom, not against the wall. That way the light falls on the counter where your hands are, and you don't see the bar itself from across the room.

Light bars, puck lights or LED strips?

Light bars give an even line of light across the counter. They're the best choice for cooking, and most of this list is bars.

Puck lights are small rounds that make pools of light. They look pretty on a backsplash, in a glass cabinet or on open shelves, but they leave darker gaps between them on a counter.

LED strips are flexible tape you cut to length. They hide well, but the cheap ones tend to be cool blue-white and show every tiny dot of light on a shiny counter. To run one under a cabinet, stick it near the front edge, use the clips at the corners, and route the cord along the back. For a rental kitchen, a bar is less fuss.

How much to spend on under cabinet lights

About $16 to $25 gets you one solid fixture: the GE 18-inch bar or the Maxxima plugged in, or a pair of rechargeables like the Gritin. Between $30 and $46, you're buying coverage (three to six bars or lights) or extras like a remote, a dimmer or a charging dock.

Splurge or save? The Enbrighten at about $40 gives you five whites, a dimmer and very bright, true colors. The GE at about $18 gives you a warm, bright bar and nothing more. For one short counter, save. For a dark kitchen you cook in every night, the Enbrighten is worth the extra $22. The kitchen-store kits that wire into the wall start well above $50 and add an electrician's bill. For the rest of the apartment, room by room, see my apartment lighting guide.

How I picked

What decides a good under cabinet light is mostly numbers: lumens for the length, how it gets power, and whether you can get a warm white. After that, it's how it mounts, and magnets or adhesive beat screws in a rental.

Skip the bars that only come in a cold 6000K white, and the ones that won't say how bright they are. Hardwired fixtures aren't here: they need an electrician, and a plug-in bar of the same brightness costs far less.

FAQ

How much do under cabinet lights cost?

A good one costs $16 to $46. On this list, the cheapest plug-in bar is the GE 18-inch at about $18, and the cheapest rechargeable set is the Gritin two-pack at about $16. Kits that light a whole kitchen run $33 to $46.

Which under cabinet lights are under $25?

Six of them: the Gritin pair (about $16), the MYPLUS hand-wave bar (about $17), the GE 18-inch bar (about $18), the Maxxima 24-inch bar (about $23), the TECOMLIGHT pucks and the Energizer pucks (both about $23). Everything on the list is under $50.

What are the best under cabinet lights?

The ASOKO plug-in three-pack. For about $33 you get three feet of warm, dimmable light that sticks on with magnets or adhesive. If there's no outlet, the EZVALO rechargeable five-pack is the one.

Should under cabinet lighting be 3000K or 4000K?

3000K if your kitchen has warm wood, cream cabinets or you want it cozy at night. 4000K if it's all white and you want crisp, neutral light for cooking. Several picks here let you switch whites, so you can try both on your own counter.

Are battery under cabinet lights worth it?

Yes, where there's no outlet or you want a soft motion light. They're dimmer than plug-in bars and need charging every few weeks, so for serious chopping light, plug in.

Should I do under cabinet lighting?

If you have upper cabinets, yes. The ceiling light is behind you, so your own shadow falls on the cutting board. A light under the cabinet puts it right where you work, and it makes a small kitchen look bigger and warmer at night.

Do you need an electrician for under cabinet lights?

Not for any of these. They plug into an outlet or run on batteries. Hardwired lights, the kind with no visible cord, are the ones that need an electrician.

How long do under cabinet lights last?

LED bars are rated for tens of thousands of hours: GE rates its bars at 50,000 hours, more than 40 years at three hours a day. On rechargeables, the battery wears out first, so buy from a brand with a warranty.

How do you run LED strip lights under cabinets?

Clean the cabinet bottom, stick the strip near the front edge, add clips at corners and ends so it doesn't sag, and run the cord along the back to the outlet. Cut only at the marked lines.

What is under cabinet lighting called?

Under cabinet lights, under counter lights or task lighting. The round ones are puck lights, the long ones light bars or light strips.

The verdict

For most kitchens, get the ASOKO plug-in three-pack: warm, dimmable and up with magnets for about $33. No outlet nearby? The EZVALO rechargeable five-pack goes anywhere and runs off one remote. For a dark kitchen you cook in every night, the Enbrighten 24-inch is the brightest bar here. And if you just want one good light over the cutting board, the GE 18-inch bar does it for about $18. Affordable, never cheap-looking.
