Half the furniture sold as an entryway storage bench stores nothing. It is a seat with a shelf, and the shoes still end up in a heap beside it. So I sorted the ones that hold a family's worth of footwear: cubbies, lift-tops, flip drawers, closed doors, all under $150, all sold on Amazon, all with the width and the seat rating written down so you can tell before it arrives whether it fits your hallway. Twelve made it. The bench at #1 is the one I would buy first, and it is not the most expensive one here.

1Top pick · Best overall
rustic brown entryway bench with a padded seat and twelve open shoe cubbies

HOOBRO 39-Inch Shoe Bench with Cushion and 12 Cubbies

$81.99$99.99 · 18% off
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

Twelve cubbies. That is the number that puts this one first: most benches at this price give you two open shelves and call it shoe storage, and two shelves are four pairs before it turns into a pile. Twelve compartments is a household, sorted, with a pair visible in each slot so nobody digs.

It is 39.4 inches long, rated to 330 pounds, and the padded seat is breathable cotton-linen on a sponge core with a fastener strip underneath so it stops sliding off when someone drops onto it. Two rows of hooks come with it for the coats. The catch is honest enough: open cubbies mean the shoes are on display, so the tidiness is yours to maintain. Put the dirty pair on the bottom row and nobody notices.

2The cheapest way to sit and hang
rustic wood and black metal hall tree with a shoe bench, hanging rod and ten hooks

NEWBULIG 4-in-1 Hall Tree with Shoe Bench

$39.93
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

Thirty-six dollars for a seat, a shoe rack, a hanging rod and ten hooks is the kind of price that makes you check the photos twice. It is a slim steel frame with engineered wood shelves, and the seat lifts to reveal a hidden compartment underneath for the gloves and the dog leash.

The hooks are adjustable along the rail, which is how you get adult coats and kid backpacks on the same piece without the two fighting for space. At this price the frame is light, so it wants to go against a wall rather than stand free in the middle of a room. For a rental hallway or a first apartment, nothing else on this list does this much for this little.

3Tight hallways
narrow industrial shoe bench with a wood top and two black mesh shelves

HOOBRO 3-Tier Industrial Shoe Bench, 29.5-Inch

$39.99$49.99 · 20% off
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

At 29.5 inches long and 11.2 deep, this is the bench for the hallway where two people have to pass each other. The metal legs and two mesh shelves keep the whole thing visually light, so a narrow corridor does not feel blocked by furniture.

The top carries 300 pounds, which is plenty for sitting to lace boots, and the mesh means wet soles drip through instead of sitting in a puddle. There is no cushion and no hidden compartment: this is a shoe rack you can sit on, and it is the honest version of that. At about $40, and at 19 inches high, it is also the right height to tuck under a wall-mounted coat rail.

4Hiding small stuff
white and grey entryway bench with a flip-top storage compartment and a lower shoe shelf

HOOBRO 39-Inch Entryway Bench with Flip-Top Storage

$98.99
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

Every entry has a category of thing that has nowhere to live: sunglasses, spare keys, the scarf that belongs to nobody. The flip-top compartment on this one is for those, and it sits above a two-tier shoe shelf that takes six to eight pairs of women's shoes or four to six of men's.

The frame is 39.4 by 13.4 inches with a seat rated at 330 pounds and an adjustable inner shelf you can pull out entirely for boots. Watch the inner shelf rating: 33 pounds, so it is for shoes, not for a stack of paint cans. Lift the top with both hands rather than letting it drop, the way you would with any storage bench lid.

5Shallow walls
minimalist white shoe bench with a leather-look cushion and two open shelves

VASAGLE Storage Bench with Cushion, 31.5-Inch

$65.99
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

Depth is the spec nobody reads until the hallway feels narrow, and this one is 11.8 inches deep. That is four inches shallower than most cushioned benches here, and in a 36-inch hall those four inches are the difference between walking past and turning sideways.

You still get seven pairs on the open shelves, a 2.8-inch compartment under the seat for gloves, a 2-inch foam cushion in wipeable PU and a 300 pound rating on half-inch panels. Cutout handles on both ends make it easy to shift when you vacuum. The minimalist white keeps a small entry feeling open, and the PU seat wipes clean when a wet coat lands on it, which in an entry it will.

6Boots and big feet
white farmhouse bench with two cabinet doors, metal handles and a cushioned lift-top seat

Amada 31.5-Inch Shoe Storage Bench with Cushioned Seat

$65.99$69.99 · 6% off
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

Fifteen inches deep, which sounds like a small detail until you own size 13 shoes or a pair of winter boots. Most benches here are 11 to 13 inches deep and boots go in at an angle; on this one they go in flat, standing up, behind a closed door.

Behind those doors is an adjustable shelf with five height settings, and the seat lifts for blankets or seasonal shoes. Amada gives the seat a 300 pound rating, a 2.3-inch high-resilience foam cushion and a 15-inch seat depth, which is roomier than the 13 inches most of this category settles for. Assembly runs under 30 minutes. The trade is footprint: at 31.5 inches wide and properly deep, it needs a real wall, not a sliver.

7The narrowest spot
grey narrow shoe bench with a linen cushion and a single flip-down drawer

Haotian Narrow Shoe Bench with Cushion

$69.99$75.99 · 8% off
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

The flip-down drawer is what makes a narrow bench work. Instead of a door that swings into the hallway or a drawer that needs pull-out room, the front panel tips forward and the shoes come to you, so it can live in a passage where nothing else fits.

The cushion is removable linen over foam, the panels are FSC-certified E1 MDF, and the load rating is 330 pounds. The shelf inside comes out if you need the height for boots. One flip drawer is not a family's storage, so think of this as the bench for one or two people, or as the second bench by the back door.

8Shoes out of sight
white farmhouse shoe bench with two barn doors and a padded seat cushion

HOMSHO Farmhouse Shoe Bench with 2 Barn Doors

$84.99$99.99 · 15% off
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

Some people want to see their shoes lined up. Everyone else wants the doors. This is the cheapest bench here that closes completely, with two barn doors on a 13.8-inch-deep frame and movable middle boards so tall boots and flat sandals share the same box.

The seat is a 25 mm sponge cushion with a zippered cover, which matters more than it sounds: entryway cushions get muddy, and a cover that comes off and goes in the wash is the difference between two years and five. Static load is 300 pounds. Barn doors need a few inches of swing clearance in front, so measure that before the width.

9Real wood on a budget
natural solid fir bench with visible grain, a lower slatted shelf and thick legs

WINWY 31.5-Inch Solid Wood Bench

$85.99
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

Eighty dollars for solid fir with a matte wax finish is the value surprise of this list. Everything else at this price is particleboard with a printed grain, and you can tell at arm's length; this one has actual grain, knots and faux-mortise joints that read farmhouse rather than flat-pack.

Storage is one open lower shelf, which holds four to six pairs and looks deliberate rather than makeshift. It assembles in about ten minutes with pre-labelled parts. Solid wood also means it takes a scuff and sands back, so it will outlive the cushioned benches by a decade. If you want closed storage, this is the wrong pick and the HOMSHO at #8 is the right one.

10Two kinds of storage at once
vintage brown 40-inch shoe bench with two flip drawers and a padded lift-top seat

astimey 40-Inch Shoe Bench with 2 Flip Drawers

$94.99$119.99 · 21% off
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

Two flip drawers for the shoes, a lift-top box under the seat for everything else. That combination is why this one is worth the jump from the $70 benches: you stop choosing between shoe storage and a place to put the stuff that has no home.

Forty inches wide, 11 deep, 21 high, 330 pound rating, and the drawer panels adjust for shoe height. Eleven inches of depth keeps it hallway-friendly. It weighs 47 pounds assembled, which tells you the panels are thick and also that you will want a hand carrying the box upstairs. Vintage brown with a leather-look seat, so it leans warm rather than white-and-airy.

11Wide entries
natural pine bench 43 inches long with a slatted lower shoe shelf

Amada 43-Inch Pine Wood Entryway Bench

$89.99$109.99 · 18% off
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

If you have a proper entry wall, longer is better: two people can sit at once and there is room for a basket at one end. This is 43.31 inches of 100 percent pine, 1.18-inch panels, trapezoid legs and a 400 pound rating, the highest on this list.

The lower shelf is slatted, so air moves under wet shoes instead of trapping it, and the top is wide enough to double as a drop surface for bags. It is EPA and CARB certified, and it assembles in a few steps. Pine dents. That is the nature of a soft wood, and in an entry those dents become the reason it looks lived in rather than new.

12A whole drop zone in one piece
rustic oak entryway bench with woven rattan flip drawers, a cushion and a five-hook coat rack

WINWY Rattan Narrow Entryway Bench with Coat Rack

$129.99
as of 4:01 AM ET · details

This is the splurge, and it replaces three purchases: bench, shoe cabinet and coat rack. Five hooks up top, two rattan flip drawers below holding eight to twelve pairs, a washable cushion in the middle, all on a narrow frame built for a hallway rather than a foyer.

The drawers take shoes up to 13.58 inches, so men's size 12 to 13 fits, and the shelves come out for tall boots. The coat rack section mounts to the wall, which is a plus for stability and a point to check if you are renting. Compare it against Wirecutter's favorite bench at $330: this one costs a third as much and, unlike that one, it holds shoes.

What to look for in a budget entryway storage bench

Four numbers tell you almost everything, and three of them are usually buried at the bottom of the listing.

Seat rating. Under 250 pounds is decorative. Anything you will actually sit on wants 300 or more, and every pick here clears that. Depth. Eleven to 13 inches keeps a hallway walkable; 15 inches fits boots standing up but eats the corridor. Width. Measure the wall, then subtract the door swing. Seat height. Eighteen inches is chair height and comfortable to stand up from. Fourteen is a footstool, and that is a different piece of furniture.

Then there is the lid. If you are buying a lift-top, look for a hinge that holds the top open on its own, or plan to lift it with two hands. A plain lid that drops shut is the single most common complaint in this category, and it is the thing I would not put where a kid reaches into it.

  • Wipeable or removable cushion covers. Entry cushions get muddy. A zip cover is worth more than a prettier fabric.
  • Adjustable inner shelves. Boots need 14 inches, flats need five. Fixed shelves waste half the box.
  • Feet, not a flat base. A raised frame lets you sweep under it, and an entry floor needs sweeping.

Shoes: cubbies, lift-top or open shelf

Cubbies hold the most and hide the least. One pair per slot means nobody stacks, which is why the 12-cubby bench sits at #1. Choose these if the shoe pile is the problem you are solving.

Lift-tops hide everything, which is their appeal and their flaw: what goes in the box under the seat rarely comes out, and shoes in a sealed box after a wet walk will smell by Thursday. Use them for hats, gloves and out-of-season pairs.

Open shelves are the honest middle. Air moves, wet soles dry, and you can see what you own. Two shelves hold four to seven pairs, which is a couple rather than a family.

Flip drawers are the small-space answer: the front tilts toward you instead of swinging, so the bench works in a passage. Capacity is lower, around four to six pairs per drawer.

If your shoe problem is bigger than any bench, a closed cabinet solves it instead, and I sorted those in my budget mudroom cabinets and lockers.

Small entry? The width that actually fits

Standard interior doors are 30 to 36 inches wide and swing through about the same. In a small entry, that swing is the real constraint, not the floor.

The rule I use: keep the bench under 36 inches wide and under 13 inches deep if it sits on the same wall as the door. Picks 3, 5, 7 and 9 are built for exactly that. Then hang the coats above the bench rather than beside it, because a hook rail uses vertical space the bench is not using.

Seat height matters more in a tight entry too. A tall bench in a narrow hall feels like a wall, so 17 to 19 inches keeps the sight line low and the room open. And if the wall is genuinely too short for any bench, the whole space still works with hooks and a tray, which is what my budget mudroom storage picks are built around.

Mudroom bench: same thing, bigger job

A mudroom bench with storage is this same piece of furniture doing harder work: wet boots, sports kit, four people arriving at once. The specs shift accordingly.

Go wider (40 inches or more) so two people can change shoes at the same time, and prefer open or vented storage so wet gear dries. Mesh shelves and slatted bases matter far more here than a pretty cushion, and a washable cover stops being optional. Picks 1, 10 and 11 are the ones I would put in a real mudroom.

If the mudroom wall is long enough for a bench and cabinets, the full plan lives in my mudroom cabinets and lockers roundup, including what a custom build actually costs.

How much to spend

Between $36 and $56 you are buying a functional shoe bench: a frame, a seat, open shelves. Nothing here is flimsy, and pick 2 at about $36 does more than its price suggests.

The best value band is $70 to $95. That is where the cushions get thick, the storage closes, the depth gets usable and the ratings climb to 330 pounds. If you only want to read one line of this article, read that one.

Above $110 you are paying for solid wood, extra width or an all-in-one drop zone. For comparison, the benches Wirecutter picks for this job run $150 to $800 and none of them stores shoes.

How I picked

A bench by the front door lives or dies on four numbers: width, depth, seat rating and how many pairs of shoes it genuinely holds. Those are the figures I lined up across several dozen listings, along with what the cushion is made of and whether the shelves move.

Benches that seat you and store nothing stayed off the list, however good they look, and so did dining benches and outdoor benches that get sold into this category.

FAQ

How much should I spend on an entryway bench?

Seventy to ninety-five dollars is the band where these get genuinely good: a thick cushion, closed or cubby storage and a 300 pound seat. You can spend $36 and still get a working bench with hooks. Above $130 you are buying wood, width or a coat rack built in.

Which of these benches are under $150?

All twelve, at the price shown when I checked. Nine are under $100 and four are under $56. The priciest is the WINWY rattan bench with the coat rack at about $130.

What is the best entryway bench with storage?

For most homes, the HOOBRO 39-inch bench with 12 cubbies at about $80: it holds the most shoes per dollar, seats 330 pounds and comes with hooks. If you would rather not see the shoes at all, the HOMSHO barn-door bench closes completely for the same money.

What is a good small bench for an entryway with storage?

Look for under 32 inches wide and under 13 inches deep. The VASAGLE at 31.5 by 11.8 inches and the Haotian flip-drawer bench are the two built for that, and the flip-drawer front means nothing swings into the hallway.

What is an entryway storage bench called?

The same piece sells under four names. A shoe bench or shoe storage bench has shelves or cubbies underneath. A mudroom bench is the wider, harder-wearing version. A hall tree is a bench with a coat rack attached. A storage bench with a lift-top seat is sometimes sold as a window bench or an end-of-bed bench, and it is the same furniture.

What is the best type of storage for an entryway?

Layer it: shoes low, coats high, small things in a closed box. A bench with cubbies plus a hook rail above it covers 90 percent of what lands by a front door. Add a tray for wet boots and one bin per person for gloves, and the pile stops re-forming.

The verdict

If you want the one that solves the shoe pile, get the HOOBRO 39-Inch Shoe Bench at about $80. Twelve cubbies, hooks included, 330 pounds of seat. Spending as little as possible? The NEWBULIG 4-in-1 Hall Tree gives you a seat, a rack and ten hooks for about $36. Hallway too narrow? The VASAGLE Storage Bench is 11.8 inches deep and still takes seven pairs. Want the whole drop zone in one piece? The WINWY Rattan Bench with Coat Rack at about $130 does bench, cabinet and hooks together. Affordable, never cheap-looking.

If the wall by your door is too narrow even for the slim picks, a console does the drop-zone job standing up, and I sorted those in my budget console tables. A mirror above the bench is the other half of the trick, and the arched mirrors I would buy are all there.
