What's out
Gray, the color of the late 2010s
Gray: Keep the sofa, warm it up.
30.6% → 6.8%
2019 to 2026 · share of living room color searches
In 2019, almost a third of living room color searches were for a gray one. Now it's fewer than one in fourteen.
Gray had a long, comfortable run, and it was everywhere: sofas, bedrooms, bathrooms, rugs. Today it has slipped to seventh place across the whole home, behind green, black, white, pink, blue and even brown. If your sofa is gray, you don't need a new sofa. You need warm things around it: a rust or terracotta pillow, a chocolate brown throw, a vintage-style rug with some red in it. The gray goes back to being a calm base.

Two washed linen covers in terracotta change what a gray sofa says, for less than a takeout dinner.
The numbers
- Gray and white were tied at the top in 2019, at 18.8% each of all home color searches. Gray is at 5.7% of all home color searches in 2026, seventh place.
- In the living room: 30.6% of living room color searches in 2019, 6.8% in 2026.
- "Gray living room" went from about 4,000 searches a month in 2019 to under 600 in 2026.
The all-white kitchen
White: The stark, all-white kitchen is the part that dated.
39.1% → 11.7%
2019 to 2026 · share of kitchen color searches
In 2019, white was almost four kitchen color searches in ten. Green has taken its place.
Of every room, the kitchen is where white fell hardest. If your kitchen is all white, you don't need to repaint. A green runner, one wood board left out on the counter and a plant do more than a gallon of paint.

A wood shelf on black brackets adds warmth to a white kitchen wall in an afternoon.
The numbers
- White, kitchen color searches: 39.1% in 2019, 11.7% in 2026.
- "White kitchen cabinets": about 43,500 searches a month in 2019, about 19,000 in 2026.
Teal
Teal: Move it toward forest or olive green and it looks current again.
3.8% → 1.6%
2019 to 2026 · share of home color searches
Teal is at less than half of its 2019 share of home color searches.
Teal was a 2019 favorite, and rugs fell hardest. If you love a deep blue-green, you don't have to give it up. Pull it a little toward forest or olive green, and the same mood looks like this year.

Swap one teal pillow for an olive or forest green velvet cover. Same mood, new year.

- "Teal bedroom": about 1,700 searches a month in 2019, about 750 in 2026.
Fading, not gone
White, everywhere else
White: Not dead, just warmer. Keep the walls, soften the rest.
18.8% → 9.5%
2019 to 2026 · share of home color searches
White went from tied for first in 2019 to third place in 2026.
White has had a long, slow fall across the whole home, but it's still one of the three most searched colors. What dates a white room is the cold version: bright white everything, nothing soft. Keep the white walls, and bring in cream, oatmeal and wood. My warm neutral living room ideas show how to do that without it going flat.

Soften a white room before you touch the paint: a cream cable-knit throw, one wood tray, one linen lamp shade.

The black accent wall
Black: Still the top accent wall, just past its high.
33.0% → 23.4%
2024 to 2026 · share of accent wall color searches
About one accent wall search in three was for black at the peak. It's sliding.
Black is still the number one accent wall color, so a black wall isn't dated yet. The colors gaining fastest on accent walls are olive green and brown, which tells you where the next one is going: dark, but warm.
Try it for less
Keep the black wall and change what hangs on it: wood frames, brass, and a framed print set.
The numbers
- Olive green, accent walls: 1.5% of accent wall searches in 2023, 5.3% in 2026.
What's in: green, everywhere
Green is the color of the decade so far. It more than doubled its share of home color searches since 2019, and it has been the number one home color every year since 2023.

2026 kitchen color trends: green takes over
Green: The kitchen color of right now. Rent? Bring it in with textiles.
9.7% → 32.9%
2019 to 2026 · share of kitchen color searches
When people search a kitchen color today, about one time in three it's green.
This is the biggest single swap in the whole set. You don't have to paint cabinets you don't own, though. In a rental kitchen, green comes in through a runner, a tea towel, a plant on the windowsill and one green canister.

A green-striped runner does most of the work. My washable kitchen rugs start at about $18.
The numbers

Green sofas
Green: The most searched sofa color now. Try it on the pillows first.
7,162 → 27,238
2019 to 2026 · "green couch", searches a month
Almost four times more people search for a green couch than in 2019.
Green is also the most searched sofa color now. If a new sofa isn't in the budget, a pair of green velvet pillows on a neutral sofa gets you most of the look.

Kitchen cabinet colors for 2026
Sage green: White still leads, but the greens are catching up fast.
0.6% → 9.5%
2019 to 2026 · share of kitchen cabinet color searches
Sage has climbed on kitchen cabinets every single year since 2019.
White is still the most searched kitchen cabinet color, at about half its 2019 share. Green is right behind it, and together, green and sage now pass white. Gray, the other 2019 favorite, has fallen to sixth. If you want a cabinet color that won't date, black is the steadiest of the eight years, staying between about 13% and 18% of cabinet searches the whole time.

What's plateauing: sage green
Sage green: Keep it, and give it wood and one rust piece.
4.9% → 4.6%
2025 to 2026 · share of home color searches
Its first dip, after six years of climbing.
Sage was the breakout of the early 2020s. It depends where it is, though. In bedrooms, sage peaked back in 2022. On kitchen cabinets and in living rooms it's still at its best year yet. So sage isn't over, it has just stopped being new. If you already have it, keep it, and give it the warm company it needs. My sage green living room ideas are all about that.

2019 to 2026 · "chocolate brown couch", searches a month
Fourteen times more people search for a chocolate brown couch than in 2019.
Brown had its best year of the eight in 2026, and on sofas it doubled in three years. Chocolate brown is the one moving fastest. It's still a small share of all searches, but it more than tripled in two years. The easiest way in is a throw on a cream or green sofa, or a dark wood side table. My chocolate brown living room ideas keep it rich, never 2005.

Burgundy
Burgundy: Low and soft: a faded rug, velvet pillows, a quilt.
2.0% → 5.2%
2025 to 2026 · share of rug color searches
Burgundy more than doubled its share of rug searches in a single year.
Burgundy doubled in a single year across the whole home, and rugs lead the way. It's climbing in bedding too. It works best low and soft, and it sits beautifully next to green, which is handy, since green is everywhere. In a bedroom, it's the shortcut to my moody bedroom ideas without painting anything dark.

2023 to 2026 · "butter yellow kitchen", searches a month
Still tiny, but it has grown every year since 2023: "butter yellow kitchen" went from 46 to 529 searches a month.

Also warming up
Beige: The quiet winner on the bed.
1.3% → 9.0%
2019 to 2026 · share of bedding color searches
Beige bedding went from rare to one bedding search in eleven.
Beige is the riser on beds, and olive green and terracotta are climbing as well: both had their best year yet in 2026. Pair them with linen, wood and a little rust, and a bedroom goes earthy without going drab.

How to try a 2026 color without repainting
- Pillows first. Two covers in the new color change a sofa for less than a takeout dinner. My throw pillow picks, linked at the end of this page, all cost under $25.
- Then a throw. Chocolate brown or burgundy over a sofa arm warms up a gray or white room on the spot. The throw blankets I'd buy are under $40.
- Bedding is the biggest patch of color you can change in one go. Beige, butter yellow or burgundy, it's the whole bed, and a duvet cover is enough.
- A rug carries a color across the whole floor. Burgundy and brown rugs are the fastest risers. My budget area rugs have a vintage-style pick for about $90.
- Paint one wall, not four. If you own the place, an accent wall is a weekend and a gallon. Olive and brown are the accent wall colors gaining fastest.

FAQ
What are the most popular kitchen cabinet colors in 2026?
White is still first, at 19.3% of kitchen cabinet color searches in 2026, but that's about half its 2019 share. Green is right behind at 16.0%, then black (13.4%), blue (9.9%) and sage green (9.5%), which has climbed every year since 2019.
What color is replacing gray in 2026?
Green. It has been the most searched home color every year since 2023, at 15.8% in 2026, and it took gray's place at the top for living rooms, sofas, rugs and bathrooms. On sofas, brown is the other big riser.
Is gray out of style for 2026?
Yes, as a trend. Gray fell from 18.8% of all home color searches in 2019 to 5.7% in 2026. A gray sofa still works, it just needs warm colors around it.
Is sage green out of style in 2026?
No, but it has stopped climbing. Sage reached 4.9% of home color searches in 2025 and slipped to 4.6% in 2026. On kitchen cabinets and in living rooms it is still at its highest.
What colors go with sage green?
Warm ones. Terracotta or rust, warm wood like oak, and cream rather than stark white. A little brass or black gives it an edge.
What color goes with a gray couch?
Warm colors: rust, terracotta or burgundy pillows, a chocolate brown throw, and a rug with some red or brown in it. Burgundy and brown are the fastest-rising rug colors, so a faded burgundy rug under a gray couch looks current.
What color pillows go with a brown couch?
Cream, sage or olive green, and burgundy. Cream is one of the colors climbing fastest on sofas, and green is the most searched sofa color, so either one keeps a brown couch fresh.
What paint colors are outdated?
These numbers count searches, not paint sales, but they show which colors people stopped looking for. Gray fell from 18.8% of US home color searches in 2019 to 5.7% in 2026, teal from 3.8% to 1.6%, and white went from 39.1% of kitchen color searches to 11.7%.
What colors are coming in for 2026?
Brown (6.4% of home color searches, its best year), chocolate brown, burgundy (doubled from 1.1% to 2.3% in one year) and butter yellow. Beige is the riser on beds.
How to read these numbers
Every number here is a share. I take all the US Google searches for a color plus a room or a piece ("gray living room", "sage green kitchen cabinets", "chocolate brown couch") and look at how many went to each color, January to August of each year, 2019 to 2026. People search a little less in 2026 than they used to, so raw counts would make everything look like it's falling. The share tells you which color people pick when they do look.
Google sometimes counts two ways of saying the same thing together (couch and sofa, gray and grey), so each is counted once. In 2020 everyone searched about twice as much, so that year shows on the charts but never counts as a peak. Searches like "yellow walls" are left out; accent wall searches are kept as their own category. The full table, every color and every year, is on the quiz page linked at the top, with a file you can download.

The cheapest way to try a new color is on your sofa.
Throw pillows are where a trend costs the least to test. Here are the ten covers I'd buy, all under $25 each, in linen, velvet and texture.
